Helmutas Šabasevičius

The book A Concise History of Lithuanian Ballet (Lith. Trumpa Lietuvos baleto istorija) by Helmutas Šabasevičius (the publishing house Krantai) was first published in English and then, following a year, the book was printed in Lithuanian.

The volumes of History of Lithuanian Theatre (Lith. Lietuvių teatro istorija) cover the period from 1929, whereas the culture of Lithuanian dance dates back to much older times. The 17th century opera performances shown in Lithuania already contained dance elements. Such noble families of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as the Radziwiłł, the Tyzenhaus and the Ogiński also had great theatrical ambitions and a lot of dances used to be performed in their manors.

These facts as well as the other facts on the early history of dance can be found in the new publication. Author Helmutas Šabasevičius says, "I have included the history of both state and independent ballet companies, and I have reviewed their repertoire from the very first performance in 1925 until their newest premieres."
