Saulius Varnas

Saulius Varnas was born in Panevėžys, on August 23, 1948. In 1970, he finished the Acting Studio of the Panevėžys Drama Theatre and worked as an actor at the theatre until 1973. In 1973, Varnas graduated from the Faculty of Industrial and Civil Construction of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. In 1978, Saulius Varnas completed his studies in Theatre Directing at Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography, and in 1976, he also completed the Higher Courses in Foreign Languages in Leningrad (the specialty of a German translator). In 1978-1980, Saulius Varnas worked as a director of the Šiauliai Drama Theatre, and later, in 1980-1989, was a chief director of the theatre. During 1989-1990, the artist was employed as a director at the Panevėžys Drama Theatre and was also the head of the theatre in 1992-1997. In 1990-1992, Saulius Varnas was the Vice Mayor of the city of Panevėžys. Since 2014, the artist has been employed as the chief director of the Mogilev Regional Drama Theatre. The director furthered his knowledge in theatre in Vienna, Amsterdam and Washington. His earlier works include, inter alia:Death of Tarelkin (Russian: Смерть Тарелкина) by Aleksandr Sukhovo-Kobylin, Woyzeck by Georg Büchner, Lunin, or the Death of Jacques (Russian: Лунин, или смерть Жака) by Edvard Radzinsky, Wild Strawberries (Swedish: Smultronstället) by Ingmar Bergman, The Trial (German: Der Process) by Franz Kafka.
